"Dueling Detectives!" is the second half of the fourth episode in the nineteenth season of Arthur.

Summary[edit]

Fern, aka Detective Virgule Watteau, is on the case when Wally goes missing in Elwood City.[1]

Plot[edit]

Bastings's dummy Wallace has gone missing. While Watteau starts looking for clues, Bastings tries to tell her that he has hired the Grey Dove to solve the crime. Watteau and the Dove immediately start bickering.

Dueling Detectives

Fern Walters arrives late at school because of a dentist appointment. She learns from Arthur, Buster and Francine that Wally has disappeared from the music room. When she gets there, George is already talking to Binky, who is trying out a police detective kit. George asked him for help, since Fern was not there.

Binky asks Fern to work together, though she is unwilling. He tells her that Wally and several other props for a PTA variety show were stored in the music room which was then locked by Mr. Morris. When George went there after school, Binky was practicing the clarinet and Wally was gone. Binky suspects that one of the other show contestants stole the dummy.

In Fern's imagination, the Grey Dove suggests that the thief came over the roof. Watteau retorts that the Grey Dove could only know this if he had been on the roof himself. The Grey Dove looks guilty.

In the real world, Fern tails Binky while he is searching for clues. When she mentions a wild goose chase, Binky takes her literally and she sends him off to city hall to check on geese. Francine confesses to Fern that she took Wally out of his case, but not out of the room, shortly before Mr. Morris locked the door.

Fern suspects Binky of stealing Wally and goes to his house. Binky meets her there and they both accuse each other of being the thief. Binky suspects Fern because she sent him to look for a wild goose, and he uses his toy handcuffs to cuff Fern's wrist to his. Then he notices that he has lost the key for the handcuffs.

Binky and Fern search for the key outside city hall. Binky assures Fern that George did not mean to hurt her feelings by asking Binky for help. Fern tells Binky about Francine taking Wally out of his case. Suddenly, they both have an idea and run to school. While dodging obstacles, still handcuffed together, they reason that one person had access to the room and did not know that Wally was part of the show.

Binky and Fern talk to Mr. Morris. He thought that Wally belonged to the kindergartners and put him in their room. George gets him just in time for the show.

After the show, Binky and Fern want to clap and realize that they really need to find the handcuff key.
