The episode starts at the Elwood City Preschool. D.W. is making James build a snowman for her when Emily comes up and hands her a card. It is an invitation to Emily's winter ice skating party. The Tibbles and James are invited too. D.W. argues with the Tibbles about which one is the best preschool skater. The Tibbles leave and smash her snowman as they go. James doubts his skating abilities but D.W. says that she will give him private lessons before the party.
During recess at Elwood City Preschool , DW and James are making a snowman (James is doing all the work while DW's telling him what to do). Emily's handing out invitations to her midwinter-party that's coming up on Saturday--Emily tells DW and James (who each receive an invitation) that it's going to be an ice skating party. Timmy and Tommy Tibble also each get an invitation to the party, and they're excited about ice skating since they already play ice hockey. When the twins offer to teach some of their moves to DW, she declines, claiming that she's got moves of her own--DW claims that she's been ice skating since she was three and boasts that she's probably the best ice skater in the entire preschool. After the Tibbles leave (smashing James and DW's snowman with their sled) and Emily goes to finish handing out the rest of the invitations to her party, James laments that he'll be the only kid at the party who won't be able to ice skate. Feeling bad for him, DW offers to give James private lessons before the party on Saturday.

The next scene is at the Read's house. Arthur gets home from school and is just shutting the door when D.W. crashes into him. She is practicing for skating by sliding on the floor in socks and yells at him for not being cautious at the 'ice rink'. As they get up, Arthur reminds D.W. that she has only ever skated three times and will likely fall a lot at the party. D.W. is still sure that she will be a perfect skater.
Later that day, when Arthur finally gets home from school and is taking off his jacket, hat and gloves, DW (sliding around on the floor without her shoes on) slams into her brother. Though DW tries scolding her brother for nut being more cautious at the "ice rink," Arthur scolds his sister for what she's doing, pointing out that their house isn't an ice rink and notes that she could get hurt if she continues what she's doing now. DW explains to Arthur that she's going to be giving James a private ice skating lesson the next day and that she's practicing now due to being "a little rusty" when it comes ice skating. Arthur points out to his sister that she's only ever gone ice skating three other times in her life and reminds her of what happened the last time they went ice skating: DW was so sore after the last time they went ice skating that she ended up eating dinner standing up. DW doesn't see the big deal about this and argues that she's a natural when it comes to ice skating.

That night, while being tucked into bed, D.W. asks her mom if her ice skates are sharp enough to go really fast. Mom says that the skates are just as great as they are, and she turns the light off. D.W. goes to sleep smiling as she thinks of how much better she will be than the Tibbles. D.W. dreams that she is at the skating party. The Tibbles are bothering James so she spins fast to hit them with ice. She then lassos the twins with a rope and skates a perfect routine under a spot light, to loud applause.
That night, while being tucked into bed, Jane assures DW that her ice skates are all prepped and ready to go for tomorrow. As she's sleeping that night, DW dreams about showing up the Tibble Twins at Emily's ice skating party while defending James from them and being the best ice skater at the party.

The next day, D.W. and James go to the rink to practice. D.W. falls as soon as she enters the rink, and she continues falling, making wilder excuses as the day goes on. It appears that James is actually better than D.W. at skating. The Tibbles show up and laugh at D.W.'s falls. She calls James a terrible student and asks her mom to go back home. Nadine is in D.W.'s room when she D.W. gets home. They talk about how bad the day went and agree to convince Emily to have a different kind of party.
The next day, DW meets James at the rink for their private lesson. However, it turns out that DW's not as good as she claims to be at ice skating, as she falls as soon as she enters the rink and keeps falling more and more as the "lesson" goes on, making wilder excuses as the day goes on. James turns out to be pretty good at ice skating (he at least doesn't fall as frequently as DW does). The Tibble Twins soon show up and laugh at DW's falls, and she calls James a terrible student, asking her mom to go back home. When DW enters her room, Nadine (who's painting her toenails) asks DW how it went. DW admits that it didn't go well and she also confesses to Nadine that she's a terrible ice skater, acknowledging that she's not as good as she boasted to her classmates. Worried about what might happen at the party, Nadine gives DW the idea to try and convince Emily to have a different kind of party.

At preschool the next day, D.W. gives Emily a brochure on having a Mary Moo Cow themed party. Emily says she can't change the party this late, so D.W. starts worrying about skating again. She daydreams about the party. In the dream, everyone else is skating perfectly and doing hard tricks, but D.W. falls again and again. Emily asks D.W. to leave for falling so much, but D.W. can't even stand to get off the rink. Then the Tibbles drive in with a crane, carrying D.W. off the ice and back home. They leave her in the Read's small frozen swimming pool, saying "Now that's more your size!"
The next day when they're at preschool, DW gives Emily a brochure that shows a Mary Moo Cow-themed party. While Emily notes that it certainly seems fun, she explains to DW that it's too late to change the party, as her mother has already booked the ice rink and everything else for it--though Emily considers having a Mary Moo Cow-themed party for her end-of-winter party. Later on, DW has antoher dream about the party, but this, DW's skating terribly while everyone else is skating perfectly--DW keeps falling until Emily asks her to leave the party, but when DW can't get up to leave the rink, the Tibbles shown up with crane, using it to carry DW back home and put her on the read's frozen kiddie pool, but DW can't even stand up on that ice.

On the morning of the party, D.W. enters the dining room pretending to be sick. Mrs. Read knows that D.W. is faking and asks why she doesn't want to go to the party. D.W. won't admits that she is bad at skating, so Arthur says it instead. D.W. gets offended and Mom tells Arthur to give D.W. a final skating lesson so she feels better about going to the party. Arthur teaches D.W. how to stop and turn, but D.W. wants to learn fancy tricks. Arthur says he can't teach her those, so D.W. goes to the party still worrying about her skills.
On the morning of the party, DW tries pretending to be sick in order to get out of attending the party. Jane knows that DW's faking sick and asks why she doesn't want to go to the party anymore, as she really seemed to be looking forward to the party before. DW initially refuses to explain why, so Arthur says it for her: DW doesn't want to go to the party anymore because DW realized that she's not as good at ice skating as she thought she was. This makes DW mad, so Jane makes Arthur give DW a final lesson before the party to help her feel better. At the ice rink, Arthur's able to teach his sister how to stop, turn and slow down on her own, but DW wants him to teach her how to do fancy tricks, which Arthur doesn't know how to do. Arthur points out to DW that you need to learn the basics before learning the fancier, more complicated stuff. DW ultimately goes to the party while still worrying about her skills.

D.W. sits on a bench at Emily's party. When Emily asks her why she is not skating, D.W. fibs, saying she hurt her leg doing a fancy spin. James shows up and sits next to D.W., saying he won't skate because he was a terrible student. D.W. feels guilty and tells him that she only said that because she was falling a lot. James gets confident then and tries to convince D.W. to get on the ice. Seeing that the others (including the Tibbles) are falling just as much as she does, D.W. finally chooses to go ice skating with her friends.
During the party, DW's sitting by herself on a bench. When Emily skates up to her and asks her why she's not skating, DW fibs by claiming that she hurt her leg doing a fancy ice skating move. James soon shows up and sits on the bench next to her, saying that he won't skate  because he was a terrible student. DW feels guilty about this and admits that he's not bad at ice skating--she only said that he was a terrible student because she was jealous of the fact that he was doing better than she was. When DW and James look out at their classmates, they see that none of the other students (including Emily and the Tibble Twins) aren't doing as well as they thought they would, James offers to skate with DW, so at least she won't look as silly falling if she were by herself. DW accepts this and the two of them finally join their classmates.

"D.W. on Ice" is the first half of the ninth episode in the eleventh season of Arthur.

Summary

D.W. boasts about her skills at ice skating for an upcoming ice skating party, but becomes worried that her friends will find out that she is giving false information and cannot skate well.

Plot

Arthur starts the introduction by saying "Wouldn't it be great if you only had to do something a few times to be really good at it?" He goes on pretending that he is a master golfer, fluent in French, and great at art without ever practicing. "But life just isn't like that," he says, "unless you're D.W." The scene then changes to show D.W. bossing Emily around for criticizing her artwork. "What do you mean my drawing doesn't look like a cat? It's perfect! Everything I do is perfect!" she yells.
