"Pets and Pests" is the first half of the seventh episode in the seventeenth season of Arthur.
Summary
There's a mouse loose in the Read home! And D.W. wants it gone…NOW! When traps fail, Arthur enlists the help of an expert mouse catcher…a fearless hunter who laughs in the face of danger: Nemo??[4]
Plot
The Read Family is finding a rat in their house and it must be taken care of. However, all of their attempts to dispose of it are to no avail. Arthur seeks desperate measures by taking expert mouse catcher Nemo into their house. But, Nemo freaks out at the rat's big size and runs away from it. Nemo and Pal then decide to work together to drive out the rat. They place a piece of salami outside the door of the house and wait for the rat to come. When the rat does come, they quickly shut the door congratulating themselves on driving out the rat.
Yet, the rat had a secret entrance of getting into the house and shows up in front of them moments later. Both Nemo and Pal run away in terror of the rat. Meanwhile, the Read Family is deciding to call an exterminator to kill the rat and destroy it once and for all. Ladonna Compson decides to show up on that day with her pet albino rat, General Higgins. General Higgins decides to scout around the house to find water. He comes across Pal and Baby Kate who at first impression, think he's the same rat that's been bothering them. They come to find out that he's Ladonna's pet rat.
General Higgins offers to have a talk with the rat. He tells the rat that she can find great cheese in Mr. Ratburn's house and the rat asks, "Any Camembert?", and General Higgins replies "Most certainly." With that, the rat sets to find Mr. Ratburn's house. D.W. then spots General Higgins and prepares to kill him mistaking him for the other rat . Ladonna intervenes just in time to save General Higgins and shows D.W. how smart he is. Ladonna shows D.W. and Arthur the tricks that General Higgins can do and D.W. becomes very fond of him. The exterminator comes and Ladonna sets out to leave with General Higgins, while Arthur goes to return Nemo to Francine.

Episode connections
- Arthur and Francine play Confuse the Goose, which is a bit unusual as Arthur normally dislikes Confuse The Goose.
- Pal tries to join Nemo in evil laughing, as he did in "Pet Projects". He wasn't very good at it this time, either.
