Arthur Read, "Arthur Goes Crosswire"

Mary Alice "Muffy" Crosswire is the richest girl in Elwood City, and lives in a huge mansion. Muffy first came to Lakewood Elementary in the second grade, which is shown in the episode Arthur and the True Francine. This is when she met Arthur and his friends and quickly became best friends with Francine Frensky. Like Arthur, she is 8 years old and in the third grade, but she is very wealthy. She is often called a snob and spoiled because of her wealth, attitude and selfishness shown in the episode Spoiled Rotten. She is voiced by Melissa Altro.

Appearance

Muffy is a light skinned anthropomorphic monkey. In the earlier seasons, she was shown with buck teeth. However in later seasons, the teeth seem to have disappeared. Her usual outfit is a purple dress over a long white blouse and finished with black Mary Janes with long white socks. Muffy's hairstyle is two long braids with a matching pair of purple bows. She is often seen with this hairstyle in most of the episodes, but she sometimes changes her hairstyle for a formal event or when she has to. In some of the episodes she is seen with different haristyles such as "Francine's Bad Hair Day", "Muffy's Art Attack", "Lights, Camera, Opera!", "The Lousy Week", "Don't Ask Muffy" and "The Election".

Alternate hairstyles

Throughout the series, Muffy had many alternate hairstyles. She gets her hair done for many formal occasions, and the place she goes for hairdressing is at the Salon de Beauté.

Other Media

In the Living Books computer games, Muffy had a brown complexion, dark brown hair, and buck teeth in Arthur's Teacher Trouble; and then had her complexion changed to pale, her hair color changed to light brown, and her buck teeth removed in Arthur's Birthday. It was likely due to color and tone restrictions during the 16-bit era of computers and software. Her vocal tone sounded a bit deeper and was voiced by Kelly Greenley before the cartoon show replaced her with Melissa Altro.

In the later games during the 32-bit era of computers and software such as Arthur's Thinking Games, her appearance was the same as she looks in the cartoon show.

Relationships

Muffy and Chip

Family

Even with a huge mansion, Muffy's family is quite small. She lives with her Father (Ed Crosswire), her mother (Millicent Crosswire) and her butler (Bailey). Like D.W., she refers to her parents as "Mommy" and "Daddy". Muffy has a brother named Chip who was first referred to in Arthur's Perfect Christmas, but did not appear until Matchmaker, Matchbreaker.

Friends

  • Francine Frensky - She is Muffy's best friend. Though they maybe different in a lot of ways, they always manage to find something to do together. Such as the episode Muffy's New Best Friend. Francine and Muffy met when Muffy moved to Lakewood when they were both in second grade. They got to know each other better when they found out that they had the same middle name "Alice".
  • Fern Walters - Although in the earlier episodes, Muffy and Fern did not hang out as much, they are often seen hanging out whenever Muffy hosted a sleepover. One episode that Muffy and Fern got along with is Phony Fern, they are seen hanging with each other by watching a movie and talking to each other on the cellphone constantly.
  • Prunella Deegan - Muffy and Prunella are seen together when they either want to shop (for clothes, mainly), a sleepover and when there is a event at school or anything formal. (School pictures, opera, etc.). In the episode Sue Ellen Moves In it is mentioned by Arthur that when Muffy and Prunella first met they really hated eachother but later on they became best friends.

Muffy is also friends with Arthur, Buster, Brain, Binky, Jenna and Sue Ellen. It is not known if Muffy is friends with George. After all, Muffy did make fun of George in Vomitrocious! and he is often forgotten by the main group of friends.

Muffy is also close to her butler, Bailey. Since, he does everything she says and gives her advice too. In the episode The Butler Did What?, Muffy realizes she does not know anything about Bailey and is very hurt when she believes that Bailey has run away. In the end, Muffy shows a considerate side of her, and vows to learn everything about Bailey.

Muffy with 3 different outfits
  • Her speaking debut was also in Arthur's Eyes and her first line was "How do you get in trouble with the nurse?"
  • Muffy had two front buck teeth from the episode Arthur's Eyes to Arthur, World's Greatest Gleeper. It was also shown in the episode The Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club!, but sometimes would disappear in some scenes.
  • Muffy's first different hairstyle was seen in Francine's Bad Hair Day. Her hairstyle was called "Prom Queen".
  • Muffy is one of the few characters on the show with cell phones. She has had at least 4 different ones. Her first one was in Francine's Bad Hair Day, her second cellphone was in the episode Fernfern and the Secret of Moose Mountain, her 3rd phone in the 1st part of Phony Fern and her 4th one (Portalex 360) in also Phony Fern. Everything single one has been a flip phone.
  • It has been said that Muffy takes dance classes after school. She takes tap and ballroom dancing.
  • Muffy's quote "Vomitrocious", was first heard in the book Arthur's Thanksgiving, but became more and more common in the cartoon show.

  • If you listen carefully, you can tell Muffy's voice sounds different. In the later seasons, Muffy's voice seems more higher than the earlier seasons, but she is still voiced by the same voice actress.
  • In Poor Muffy, she is revealed to be allergic to the odors of some new carpets her family was once putting into their mansion, but started removing when they learned about her allergies.
  • During formal occasions, she sometimes had her frontal hair cut into bangs.
  • Muffy and Francine have the same middle name; Alice
  • She is substitute goalkeeper for the Lakewood Elementary Soccer Team.

Future

In the episode "The Contest" we see Muffy is still friends with all her friends six years. In "The Election", Muffy appears to have become president. However, I could simply be Muffy's dream and not real-life.
