Bleep is the second half of the 10th episode of Season 8. It first aired on December 26th, 2003 along with "Big Horns George." It explores the wrong of swear words.

Summary

D.W. overhears a curse word from a teenage boy, but she's afraid if she says it, something will break. The Tibbles tell her if she says it, anyone will become her zombie servant. D.W. tests this on Vicita, only to get in trouble, but her mom does not punish her because she did not know what it meant. She then decides to talk to her friends about cursing.

Plot

First, Arthur talks to the viewer about the bleep. The usage is a show called The Altos (A parody of The Sopranos). Whenever an Alto curses, it is censored with a bleep. Arthur then says that it's not used in real life, but he claims it could be fun if it was. D.W. gets a hold of the bleep button, driving him crazy. The story begins with D.W. and Grandma Thora shopping for a glass bowl. While they are shopping D.W. overhears a teenage boy aruing with his mother. The boy calls his mom a swear word (censored with a bleep) which causes the mom to drop the glass she was holding. As D.W. and Grandma Thora are walking out of the store, D.W. ponders over whether to tell Thora about the swear word she heard, but decides not to, thinking that it will make her Thora drop the glass bowl she was holding. Later that day, D.W. tells Arthur and Nadine the swear word. At the dinner table, D.W. thinks that she should tell her parents the word, but then has a fantasy that they all drop the food and drik they were holding. The next moring at preschool D.W. tells the Tibble Twins the bad word. The Tibbles tell D.W. that if she says the word to someone, that person would become her zombie servant. She then has a fantasy that she says the word in the middle of class and Ms. Morgan becomes D.W.'s zombie servant. After school, D.W. decides to prove what the Tibble Twins said as true or false by calling Vicita and tricking her into saying the word to her family. D.W. goes upstairs to her room with Nadine to spy on her to see what happens. As D.W. is spying on the neighbors Mrs. Read tells her to come downstairs for dinner several times. D.W. then sees Vicita say the word as Mrs. Read comes in her bedroom, causing D.W. to angrily say the word to her mom. As they go downstairs, the Molinas come in, where it is revealed that Vicita told on D.W. for teaching her the word, both parents get very mad at D.W. As Mrs. Read is tucking D.W. in that night, D.W. is off the hook because she didn't know what she said was wrong. Mrs. Read tells her that swear words are bad and you shouldn't say them to others. The next morning at preschool everyone is sayig the bad word to each other, and D.W. tells all of them that swearing is bad.

Controversy

Bleep has spawned controversy since its airing, and has been rarely aired on PBS' stations ever since. Even though the swear word is censored, it is thought that D.W, Vicita, and D.W.'s classmates were actually saying a real curse word.
