The episode opens with Arthur who is unable to get to sleep. He tells the viewers that sometimes no matter what you do it is impossible to get to sleep. He then names off ways his friends sometimes do to help them fall asleep. For Muffy it is counting sheep, for the Brain it is calculating pi, and for Buster, of course, it is homework. We cut back to Arthur who then names off his way of getting to sleep, which is taking a few deep breathes, imagining a clear blue lake and...but he is cut off by D.W. who yells that he is keeping her up and needs to stop talking to himself. Arthur groans and falls back onto his pillow.
In the introduction Arthur gives examples of what people do when they can not fall asleep, e.g. counting sheep (Muffy), reciting the number pi (Brain) or doing homework (Buster). D.W. bangs on the door because Arthur is keeping her awake.

The scene opens with Vicita Molina in her bedroom doing Eeny Meeny Miny Moe with her stuffed animals. She finally chooses her favorite stuffed toy llama Raulito, climbs into bed, and calls for her father. Mr. Molina searches Victa's bookshelf and asks her where "The Very Magic Mango Tree" is and Victa asks if it isn't on the bookshelf. Vicita climbs out of bed and looks under it but only finds some dust and some pennies. The Molina's search everywhere for the book. They search the kitchen, in the car (They find only a moldy sandwich in a jacket), and in the couch, where Mr. Molina finds his reading glasses but not his daughter's book. Mr. Molina offers to read Vicita a different story, and Vicita agrees, but says it probably won't work. It cuts to Mr. and Mrs. Molina reading "The Three Bears" to Vicita. Vicita starts asking her parents a bunch of questions about the books they are reading to her. It cuts to morning and Vicita has not fallen asleep but her parents have. They have gone through every book on the shelf and none of them helped.
Vicita goes to bed with her toy llama Raulito. Her father wants to read her her favorite book “The Very Magic Mango Tree”, but it is gone. The parents and Vicita search the kitchen, the car and the living room, but can not find the book. Mr. Molina reads various other books all night long. In the morning both parents have fallen asleep, but Vicita is still awake.

It cuts to Vicita, D.W,. and everyone else at preschool during recess time. Vicita sits in the sandbox and yawns. D.W. comes over to her and asks her if she wants to play. Vicita tells her maybe tomorrow because she is too tired. D.W. asks her what is wrong and Vicita says of losing her favorite book and she can't sleep without it. D.W. asks her if she tried reading a different one and Vicita explains what had happened last night. D.W. thinks and then says she knows someone who might be able to help her.
Vicita is too tired to play the next day, so D.W. asks Brain to lecture her on the sleep cycle. Instead of boring Vicita to sleep, the lecture worries her.

It cuts to D.W. and Vicita on Vicita's bed as the Brain demonstrates a pie chart to the two of them. Vicita asks if it's a pie why doesn't it have a plate also asking where the ice cream is (D.W. obviously agrees to this by nodding). Brain explains that it is a pie chart that depicts the sleep cycle. Vicita asks if it is a bicycle you ride when people asleep and comments that it sounds dangerous. D.W. tells Brain that he's supposed to be boring Vicita to sleep and not frighting her. D.W. pushes the Brain out of Vicita's room, although Brain denies this case and says it is not boring. D.W. just closes the door and shakes her head.
The Tibbles tell how they chase each other through the house until they fall asleep from exhaustion.

Buster tries hypnosis and falls asleep himself. When Vicita tells Arthur and D.W. about the book, they realize that she knows it by heart. They make a copy of the book with paper cutouts and Arthur writes down the story.

In the evening Mr. Molina reads the story. It tells how the boy Uaica runs into the jungle because the other boys tease him. He meets some animals eating mangos which make them fall asleep. Vaica climbs up the mango tree and eats a mango. He dreams of Jaguarman, who teaches him the ways of the jaguar. After that he is never teased again.

At the end of the story Vicita finds she is still awake, because Uaica is still up in the tree. She has a dream in which she and Raulito, now a talking animal, are in Vaica’s jungle. She asks a sloth for directions, but misunderstands him so she ends up at a Magic Mango Tree that keeps you awake. A macaw carries both to the right tree, even though Raulito hates to fly. Vicita has to save Raulito from a caiman that wants to eat him. After that they see Uaica, who can not get down from the tree because he is afraid of heights. Raulito tells him that he just few on a macaw despite being afraid both of heights and real animals. They encourage Vaica to climb down one branch at a time and to eat a mango.

Vicita wakes up in the morning and misses Raulito. Her father finds both the llama and “The Very Magic Mango Tree” under Vicita’s pillow. He offers to read it that night, but Vicita now has the story in her head.
