(D.W. is at a gymnastics class trying to prove to her friends that she can really do a cartwheel)

  • D.W.: Oh yeah? Well you just watch! (walks over to the balance beam)
  • Emily: Wait D.W.! (gasps)
  • Tommy Tibble: Look, she's gonna do it.
  • Tibble Twins: (grunt as they pull off their shoes)
  • D.W.: (stretches) One two three, one two three.
  • Emily: But D.W., you could really get hurt.
  • Tibble Twins: (laugh as they walk over to the balance beam)
  • D.W.: Okay, lift me up.
  • Tibble Twins: (lift D.W. and grunt)
  • Timmy Tibble: If you don't make it D.W., can we have your toys?
  • D.W.: (balances carefully)
  • Tommy Tibble: She's too scared to do it.
  • D.W.: Whoa!
  • Everyone: (gasps)
  • Timmy Tibble: Yeah, she's gonna chicken out!
  • D.W.: Whoa! Am not. (nearly loses her balance) Whoa!

(TITLE CARD)

(Back at home, Arthur and D.W. are watching the Olympics on TV)

  • Announcer: The Bulgarians take the final lap at 55 miles per hour! I wouldn't want to fall off the back of that, Bob.
  • Arthur: Cool! That's as fast as a car!
  • D.W.: Big deal, anybody can ride a sled! (changes the channel to a little kid's show) Oooooh! Pretty horsie!
  • Arthur: Hey! Put the sports back on!
  • D.W.: No way, Sports are boring! (now Arthur and D.W. get into a remote control fight as the channels alternate)
  • Arthur: Are not!
  • D.W.: Are too! (the remote control stops on a gymnastics exhibition at the Olympics)
  • Announcer #2: A perfect combo on the balance beam! It looks like Tina Trampolina will be bringing home a gold medal!
  • D.W.: Wow.... Mom! (walks out of the living room)
  • Arthur (in disbelief): Here we go again!
  • D.W.: I'll get really strong! And when I win the gold medal, I'll do cereal commercials.
  • Jane: I don't know D.W.
  • D.W.: Please Mom! I'll be so rich that you and Dad will never have to work again.
  • Jane: D.W., remember when you said that you wanted to play T-ball more than anything?

(Flashback sequence: D.W. tries to hit the ball on the tee, but misses multiple times)

  • D.W.: I could only hit balls that move.
  • Jane: And when you wanted to be a ballerina?

(Another flashback sequence: All of the students are balancing on the pole, except for D.W. who uses a stool. The instructor takes away the stool.)

  • D.W.: I have weak knees.
  • Jane: And how about the violin lessons?

(In this flashback sequence, the students are playing properly on their violins, except for D.W. who strums her violin like a guitar)

  • D.W.: I could've been really good if they didn't make me use that stick.
  • Jane: D.W., you wanted to do all those things, but you didn't want to practice. Now why is this any different?
  • D.W.: Because I really really want to do this one. Besides, Mom, I'm already good at jumping.
  • Jane: (thinks about her decision, then sighs) Alright! Huh?
  • D.W.: (hugs her mother) Oh, thank you Mom!

(At the gymnastics class, we see the Tibble Twins jump on the trampoline while the other kids are doing different exercises)

  • D.W.: (gasps) The tibbles! Hide me!
  • Jane: Oh, I'm sure your teacher can handle them.
  • Tibble Twins: (laugh and holler while jumping)
  • Ms. Morgan: (blows her whistle)
  • D.W.: (scoffs) It's Emily and her nanny! I'm in the same class with "Ms. Perfect".
  • Jane: Now D.W., just because she's smart, pretty, and very polite, doesn't mean she's perfect.
  • Emily: (says goodbye to her nanny in French and blows a kiss)
  • Jane: Well, it looks like you're about to start. I'll be in the waiting room. Don't try anything too fancy, okay?
  • D.W.: (walks over to the class, but stops and looks at the balance beam)

(Now D.W. has a daydream about herself competing in the Olympics)

  • Announcer: There's the pinwheel flip, with a frog kick follow through, and they're having tea dismount. Amazing!

(the crowd cheers as the judges give 10's to D.W.. She receives the gold medal.)

  • Announcer: Well Bob, I guess it won't be long before we see that face on a box of Crunch Cereal.
  • Announcer #2: Yep, but let's not forget the runners up. Emily, uh, what's her name? Not quite perfect, gets the silver medal.
  • Medal Person: (yawns)
  • Announcer #2: And Timmy and Tommy Tibble receive the Bronze. Although everybody knows that they should've been disqualified.
  • Tibble Twins: (fight over the medals)

(Back in reality, D.W. immediately runs over to the balance beam and tries to get on)

  • Ms. Morgan: (blows whistle) Off that balence beam, young lady!
  • D.W.: (falls off) Ow!
  • Ms. Morgan: This apparatus is not for beginners. We won't be using it for at least a year!
  • D.W.: A year? But I can't wait that long! I'll be old by then!
  • Ms. Morgan: Then you better start practicing right away. We'll start with a somersault. (now the scene switches to the students learning how a somersault is done) Then you tuck your head and roll. And that's the somersault! Everyone find a partner.
  • Emily (to D.W.): Be my partner?
  • D.W.: (looks around) I guess so. (now she attempts to do the somersault, but lands flat on her back)
  • Emily: Pretty good, but next time grab your knees. Then you'll end up on your feet.
  • D.W.: For your information, I was doing a half sault. You're supposed to end up on your back. Your turn!
  • Emily: (performs the somersault correctly)
  • D.W.: All wrong! You didn't jump high enough. The roll was too slow and you didn't smile at the end.
  • Ms. Morgan: Emily, that was lovely! Keep up the good work! D.W., next time, try holding your knees.
  • D.W.: (blushes)
  • Emily: I guess she didn't know you were doing a half sault.
  • D.W.: (growls)

(All of the students are doing handstands)

  • Ms. Morgan: Excellent posture! D.W., try to keep your back straight like Emily's.
  • Emily: You think she'll teach us how to stand on the ceiling like that?
  • D.W.: (loses her balance) Whoa!

(Everyone falls down)

(Now Ms. Morgan demonstrates a cartwheel)

  • Ms. Morgan: When you finish the cartwheel, make sure you bring your feet together. It looks simple, but takes practice to get it right. Alright, Edwin, ready?
  • Edwin: (gasps, then walks disappointedly to the mat. He then attempts to get his other hand over, but falls.)
  • Ms. Morgan: A brave attempt, Edwin. Try to break the fall with your hands. Next!
  • D.W.: (sees Emily stretching)
  • Emily: (stretches) One two three, one two three.
  • D.W.: (scoffs) Why bother!
  • Timmy Tibble: Where you going, D.W.?
  • Tommy Tibble: I'll bet I know where she's going! She's going to her mommy!
  • Timmy Tibble: Yeah, because she's afraid of doing a cartwheel!
  • D.W.: I am not! I was just going to...
  • Ms. Morgan: Well Miss Read?
  • D.W.: (attempts to do the cartwheel, but falls off the mat)
  • Ms. Morgan: Not bad, but do try to stay on the mat.
  • Tibble Twins: (laugh)
  • Ms. Morgan: Next!

(At home, D.W. practices her cartwheel and wants her mom to see it)

  • D.W.: Mommy, look at me! Look at me, Mommy! Mommy? Are you going to watch me?
  • Jane: Just a sec, D.W.. (puts a piece of clothing down) Okay, let's see it.
  • D.W.: (starts to do the cartwheel, but pauses) Don't watch, it's not ready yet.
  • Jane: (closes the dryer door)

(D.W. practices the cartwheel like crazy in her house)

  • D.W.: (cartwheels into her father) Whoa!
  • David: (grunts) Oh my gosh!

(David is not happy with D.W.)

(Now we see D.W. practice in the supermarket)

  • D.W.: (does the cartwheel, but knocks into items)
  • Supermarket Employee (over PA): Spill, aisle 5!
  • D.W.: (cartwheels into another aisle)
  • Supermarket Employee (over PA): Aisle 6!
  • D.W.: (runs and cartwheels into another aisle)
  • Supermarket Employee (over PA): Aisle 7?
  • Jane: (gasps and runs over to the aisle. There are items all over the ground) D.W.!

(Back at gymnastics class, D.W. stretches out)

  • D.W.: One two three, one two three!
  • Ms. Morgan: Alright children, form a line! It's cartwheel time!
  • Kids: (cheer and run over to the mat)
  • Ms. Morgan: Remember, look before you leap! Go!
  • Edwin: (attempts the cartwheel again, but falls)
  • Ms. Morgan: Better, Edwin. But remember, two hands are better than one! Next!
  • D.W.: (attempts the cartwheel successfully without falling) I did it! I did it!
  • Ms. Morgan: Very nice, D.W.! Legs together on your finish.
  • Everyone: (cheers)
  • D.W.: Thank you! Thank you, really! Thank you! Thank you very much!
  • Emily: (Cartwheels from one end of the gymnasium to the other)
  • Tibble Twins: (whistle)
  • Ms. Morgan: Emily, showing off is very impolite.
  • D.W.: Its not fair!

(Emily looks at herself in gulit)

(After class)

  • Emily: I'm sorry I showed off, D.W.
  • D.W.: I could've done a better one, but I didn't want to. Cartwheels are for babies.
  • Emily: Well, I think they're kinda hard.
  • D.W.: Not as hard as doing a cartwheel on the balance beam. Bet you can't do that.
  • Emily: Neither can you.
  • D.W.: Oh yeah? Well you just watch.
  • Timmy Tibble: Yeah, she's gonna chicken out.
  • D.W.: Whoa! am not! (loses her balance)
  • Everyone: (gasps)
  • D.W.: (screams)
  • Ms. Morgan: (blows her whistle multiple times as Emily and Jane rush in with her)
  • D.W.: (jumps into her mother's arms)
  • Jane: D.W., what were you doing?
  • D.W.: Oh Mom, I was just doing a cartwheel.
  • Jane: We'll discuss this on the way home, young lady. Now go put your shoes on!
  • Tibble Twins (sing): Miss Perfect, Goody Two Shoes, Told The Teacher, So She Wouldn't Lose!
  • D.W.: Hey! Leave her alone!
  • Timmy Tibble: Her?
  • Tommy Tibble: But she stopped you from doing your cartwheel!
  • D.W.: Maybe you two would like to do a cartwheel on the balance beam, hmm?
  • Timmy Tibble: (gasps) Did you hear something?
  • Tommy Tibble: Yeah, I think I hear Grandma calling us! Gotta go, bye!
  • Emily: Thanks D.W., you're a real friend.
  • D.W.: Well, after all, you did save my life. Maybe... maybe you could teach me how to do a really good cartwheel?
  • Emily: Sure, but it takes a lot of practice!
  • D.W.: I'll practice! If you promise not to be so perfect.
  • Emily: It's a deal!

(On the car ride home)

  • Jane: And you could've hurt yourself very badly there D.W.
  • D.W.: (looks out the window at some horseback riders)
  • Jane: D.W., are you listening?
  • D.W.: I'm listening. I'll be careful.
  • Jane: Good.
  • D.W.: (continues to look at the horseback riders) Mommy?
  • Jane: No D.W., you're too young to take riding lessons.
  • D.W.: (imagines herself riding a horse) Oh please Mommy? I'll be really careful. Please? Please? Please?
  • (Cow moos)
