Arthur had finally started fourth grade.   D.W had already started first grade. Arthur's new teacher was Ms. Bella.

Ms. Bella: Hello class, I guess all of you are 8 years old exept for Arthur and Muffy.

Muffy: How'd you guess?

Ms. Bella laughed.

Ms. Bella: Oh I didn't guess, your moms and dads told me.

Arthur: We have the same birthday.

Ms. Bella: First we will reveiw third grade work starting  with Social Studies.

Binky threw a spitball at Adan, the smartest kid in class.

Adan: Ouch!

Ms. Bella: BE QUIETYTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Ms. Bella seemed to be very harsh. During recess, Arthur talked to Francine aboiut his plans of leaving school unsupervised.

Arthur: I just don't feel right with Ms. Bella as my teacher.

Francine: Eitheir do I, she blamed Adan for what Binky did.

Unknowingly, Ms. Bella was  right behind them and listening.

Ms. Bella: Why if I am so harsh, you two can go to detention!

And with that, they did.   They had to sit at a desk with 5th graders, and found D.W there!

Arthur: D.W?

D.W: Arthur, that girl I don't know?

Arthur: Me and Francine are here because Ms. Nosy Miss cuaght us calling her mean.

D.W: I'm here because I beat up Binky's two little brothers who are in first grade with me.

Detentionist: Oh, Arthur I don't see you here alot.

Arthur didn't answer.

So Arthur decided to reply.

Arthur: BWANGA READY!

Detentionist: Exscuse me?

Arthur: BWANGA READY!

Francine: Arthur, what are you doing?

Arthur: She'll send us home for a good amount of time if we get too crazy with her.

Franice started yelling Bwanga! too.

Francine: BWANGA!

Detentionist: Kids, stop playing with me. You know this is detention, and if you don't sit you go home for 3 days.

Arthur would rather be at home then sit in boring detention and sit in chair for what seemed like forever, even though it was about 3 minutes.

Arthur: How long will we be here?

Detentionist: Until recess starts.

Francine: What time is it now, and where is the clcok?

Franice nor Arthur had ever been to detention. D.W had been there 3 times, because she stole from a student.

The Dentoniost pointed to the clock.  It was 30 minutes!

Arthur: How long is detention?

Detentionist: 9 more minutes for everyone.

D.W: My butt is getting tired sitting in this chair! And it feels real sticky!

Detentionist: D.W, I have seen you enough times to know you.  If your butt hurts, it's not my problem and your probably faking it.

D.W: But don't you care about me? I'm the youngest kid in here.

Detentionist: D.W, I care about everyone, but no one gets more treatment than the other.  I'm giving you all the same amount of treatment.

Arthur could tell D.W did not like the detentionist, and Arthur didn't like her eitheir.

Francine: Wow! How'd you become a detentionist?

The detentionist looked up from her paper work.  She looked puzzled.

Detentionist: (laughing) Oh my name is Lucy.  I just go by detentionist so kids won;t know my name.

Francine: Lucy, can I use the bathroom?

Lucy: Sure, just don't go anywhere else.

Arthur was now puzzled. Why would Francine talk to a meany? Why? Francine winked and Arthur knew the answer.

Arthur: So -

Francine purposely tripped and turned on the radio.

Lucy: (Covering mouth) Francine!

Francine: (Covering Mouth) Uh-oh.

The bell rang and detention was over.

Lucy: Oh, Francine your not going anywhere.  Eat applesauce and leave!

Arthur: But Francine needs to play with me, and she's one of my best friends.

Lucy: THAT'S IT! ALL 3 OF YOU KIDS ARE GOING HOME!

Arthur was kind of happy, and kind of sad.  He was kind of happy because he would get a chance to explain to his mother that he and D.W got detention.  He was kind of sad because his bestest friend in the whole wide world Francine would hate him forever and ever.

D.W: But Lucy, you can't.  I'm sweet, beautiful, and powerful! YOU CAN'T! NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME!

Arthur: She just heard that from a Beauty Lotion comercial.  Come on D.W, before our mother goes coo-coo on us.

Arthur would not admit he himself was trying to act sweet like D.W was.  He wouldn't admit he took a 6 year old's advice.

Arthur and Francine sadly walked D.W to there homes.

Francine: Lucy is a pain.

Arthur: She's strict and underworked.  Being a detentionist is so easy, because all you have to do is put kids in chairs  and call there mom and dads while you do something fun.

D.W: I know. I wanna be a detentionist, and I'm 6.

Francine: I'll  call Muffy.  She'll have her father pay Lucy to sit in a chair.

D.W started to cry.

D.W: But how will we tell Mama, Arthur?

D.W's imaginary friend appeared.

Imaginary friend: D.W, detention? What did you do?

D.W frowned and cried some more.

D.W: Oh Nadine! It was horrible! Lucy made me sit in a chair forever, until she sent me home!

Imaginary friend frowned too.

Imaginary friend: But who is Lucy? And what did you do?

D.W: Lucy is the meanest teacher ever, that's who.  And after those Tibbles called me "Meany" I could only fight them.

Arthur: D.W! Imaginary talk isn't going to help.  Were at Mom's door.

Francine had already walked to her house.

Francine: Bye Arthur! See you, maybe at school tomorrow!

Arthur could clearly see what Francine was trying to say. They would probably be grounded, and Arthur could not believe he was about to think such a 3 year old thing: FOREVER!

D.W: When Mom grounds me, I'll be so hurt Nadine will have to come and save me!

D.W cried harder.

Arthur: Oh D.W, don't be such a baby.

Arthur did not really think D.W was a baby.  Kate wasn't even in pre-school yet.

D.W: I AM NO BABY! You try being six!

Arthur: Find, find, I take it back.   Lets get this first ring before Dad notices were outside.

Arthur knocked the door as softly as he could, and he could see Francine's father was already yelling.

Francine's Father: FRANCINE FRENSKY! YOU ARE GROUNDED!

Francine gulped.

Francine: For how long?

Francine's Father: Until you prove to Ms. Bella your a good girl.

And forever, thought Arthur.  Arthur knew it clearly wouldn't be forever, but he liked saying that to seem tough.

D.W gulped too.

D.W: Arthur, Nadine thinks we should go hide before Dad realizes were out here.

Arthur: But, But -

D.W: Arthur, Nadine says its the only way.

Arthur was against this, but knew D.W (Nadine, kinda) was right.

Arthur: Lets go to Brain's.  He can help us so we won't get grounded.

D.W: Nadine says she thinks its a good idea.

Arthur and D.W ran through bushes, and even had to short cut through smaller cuts,  so no one would know they were out of school.

D.W: Arthur, I don't feel proud about this.

Arthur: Neither do I. SH! It's the school janitor, Mr. Tussy.
