We start back 10,000 years ago. It is the last of the ice age. Elwood city was a swampy forest. Large creatures live here. The American Mastodon, the Homotherium, the Short-Faced Bear and the Giant Beaver. But there where other creatures living here that we could know. Moose, squirrels, ducks, geese and many varitey of wild life. But in this period life is starting to change. Humans are coming. This would be there last strong hold for these animals. The Mastordon walked through the spring Marsh land. The lead Mastodon is a elder female. She has been traveling with this hurd for many years, her mother was the previous leader untill her death in the Mastodon Graveyard, She has rose through the herds ranks and became a well trusted member. They came upon a feild of marsh plants and the group stops and eats the low line vegitation. The American Mastodon is a member of the Elephant species. So they are related to the Mammoth. But unlike the Mammoth, the Mastodon likes the swampy forest and are not as big as the Mammoth. In the destance is a large mountain, in the future this mountain will be called Moose Mountain, but for now Moose Mountain is coverd in forests. There coming out of its cave was a large bear with a flat face. It was a male Short-Faced Bear. Like the other inhabbitains of this pre Elwood City Forest has been here for a very long time. His mate left him with his cubs along time ago. He is now alone in search for his next mate. He was large and powerful, he rarelies visits the marshy forest, but insteads hunts the boundary between the forest and the mountain. He is still half a sleep coming out of a long winter of hibernation. He will eventually wander down the mountain in search of prey. Deep in the Lakes that make up the Marsh are large beavers called Giant Beavers. They have been busy from the crack of dawn, building a new home for there growing family. Like present day Beavers they build large Dams so they can live. The winter was harsh, but beeing so far south from the ice capes kept a good deal of plant life avable for this giant rodent. The couple is a sweet bunch, never bothering there neighbours the bear, but they are always on the look out for other large predators. The only predator that the inhabitains of the marsh is worry about is the saber tooth cat called Homotherium. The cat has been hunting wild moose, and other animals all winter long. It destoryed the home of the Giant Beavers, and interrupted the Short-Faced Bear sleep over the winter month. It is considered a bully amoung the inhabbitains and someone to avoid. Still it is a new spring day here in Elwood City. The inhabbitains are bussy with there first meal of the day. At the edge of the mountain the short-faced bear has came upon a family of mooses. There was a injuried moose alone in the back of the group. The bear runs into the family scathering the moose. There the bear takes down the injuried moose. Slaming his big paws down onto the injuried leg. Coming through the forest was the Homotherium. He is hungry for meat. There in the distance was the short-faced bear eating the moose. The cat attacks the gorging bear, the bear looks up and backed up from the meal as the cat roars and claws at the giant bear. Not wanting to get injuried by the psycho cat. This cat has been known to attack anything and everyone which is why he is the bully of the Elwood City. The cat feasts on the bears kill. The bear wandered into the forest towards the beaver pond. The Giant beaver has finially finished there lodge. The beavers dived into the water as the large bear made his way to pond. A nice cold drink of water from the pond will help from the fast meal. The female beaver appeared at the surfice of the water. The bear spoted the beaver and the beaver saw him and dove under the water, scarying the large bear. By now the sun has risen to mid day. Out on the open marshy plains the Mastodon has been grazing on the shroubs and grass. The lead Mastodon was on the look out. Her heard has signs of being fresky, and more male Mastodon have been appearing on the horizon of this marsh. In the distance another male mastodon apperars, he had a broken tusk in his left tusk. Then another male Mastodon apperared. The lead Mastodon is tired of all this eyeing of her heard and all the fighting these massive bull mastodons make just to impress a few of her heard. She leaves her post start sniffing the air and listening for the faded sounds of a female mastodon in heat. Supirising enough it was a first year full grown adult mastodon. Her eyes was fixed to the two male mastodons. The lead Mastodon pushes her towards the males so that they would not do any damage to the surounding marsh or hert any of the young and old Mastodon. The female Mastodon was hesented to leave the heard to mate with one of these males. A few moments later and a few pushes latter she finaly applied to the signs of the brawling males. The lead female Mastodon moves her heard out away from the brawling males and the female Mastodon. They headed into the forests towards the Beaver pond. The dense woods snaped as the troop of Mastodon walking toward the pond. Else where the Short-Faced Bear was bored and hungry. He spent the mid mornings and early afternoon marking his territory. It was time to eat. He started heading back down to the beaver pond hoping he would find something delicious to eat. Mean time back at the Giant Beaver home, the beavers were out forging for food, mainly the pussywillow that grow by there pond. Out of the forest came the Mastodon. They stopped at the edge of the top of the Pond. The beavers has nothing to fear of the Mastodon except for there size. They countinue there feeding when the Short-Faced Bear appeared on the opposite side of the pond. The bear did not notice the beavers, but he did notice the spring fruit growing by the pond. He sites up and starts to eat the fresh berries. Everyone arounf the pond was at peace, eating and drinking not knowing another visitor will appear. Slowly quitely out of the forest appeared the Homotherium. This bully of a cat has been hungry since he stole the bears meal. Now the problem what to eat. All the animals around the pond are at peace, eating or drinking not noticing each others presents. Which one should he kill, the bear, a mastodon or maybe a beaver either way something will be on his lunch menu, just what will it be. But a noise out of the woods scared the beavers. The beavers hurried back to the pond. The splash of water made the Mastodon look up notice the bear. The Mastodon pulled ranks and gathered there young into the middle of a cluster. The noises of the Mastodon scared the bear and he drops his food and ready for attack. The noises got louder and louder. From the forests appeared a human figure it had long rabbut ears, rabbit nose and small mouth. It wore a furry coat over its body. It was a man, following behind came some other men and a few women. They where different from the wild life around Elwood City. They stoped at the edge of the pond and sat down to drink. The Homotherium took a step back and cruched to concell its self from the eyes of the people. He will have to find another place hunt. As the humans started seting up the homes around the pond. The animals moved back to there bussiness. The hurd moved out back to the marshy grassland and the bear return to the forests in the mountain. Elwood city was guite for the rest of the day. At night, the marshy forest was alive, bats where flying through the night sky the family of Moose was out grassing. When some unusal objects appeared in the marsh where wearing moose horn coats. They went to closer and closer to the moose, it was over for a moose. The next day the smell of the carcus of the dead moose has brought out the bear and the saber tooth cat. But it was not only thing that came out of the woods. The two started eyeing each other and the remains. It seems that the meat and the skin was gone, and all was left was the bones. Noises appeard from the marshy forest. It was loud howling. It got louder and louder as it got close to the Short-Faced Bear and the Homotherium. The two backed into each other when out of the forest came wolfs. A pack of Dire Wolfs appeared and surounded the two frenemeies. The wolfs growled at them and the two scared to the forest, the wolfs started sniffing the carcus of the dead wolf. With the sent they sat and eat the bones. As the day went by the men and women have been getting settled down. Out of nowhere howls sounded from the forest. The people faces went from happy to shock. It seems that the wolfs had been following them for many days. Now there in a new place the pack has not given up. Meanwhile at the pond the Giant Beavers have been shaken as the pair ate on the pond flora. The howling was new to them, they raced into the safety of the pond when the bear and cat ran to the safety of the Pond. Looking back hearing the cries of the wolf aloud them to forget that they where enemies. The humans became startled of the sound of the howling of the wolfs. It turns out that the Dire Wolfs where following the humans, and now they have run out of ground. This is the final stand between these two sepreate creatures. The humans put to gether weapons and started fire. That night the animals living around the swamp gathered in near to the beaver marsh. In the distance, they could see the humans gathering together. As the moon risen to its peak the howls of the wolf echoed across the Marsh. In matter of minutes the wolfs appeared onto the open feild, it was three of them, than there was ten of them and finally there was twenty of them. They materialized out of the surounding forests as ghosts. They growled and barked as the Dire Wolfs made there stand. The humans grabbed there weapons and lite fires so they could stand there grounds. Out of the crowd of wolfs came a large dire wolf with a scare over its eye. It was the Alpha wolf, the leader if the pack. It made a bark and the attack was on. The wolfs spread around the humans and pounce them. In the distance, the animals could see the carnage going out. They where all happy that it was on the other side of the Marsh. But they were wrong. Out of the forest more wolfs came onto the animals side of the marsh. This time it was the Alpha female. The second in command, she had twenty more wolfs with her. She and her half attacked the other animals as if the wolfs did not want any witness to the demises of the humans. The wolfs attacked the Mastordon herd, Homotherium, the cave bear and the Giant Beaver. The Animals back into the Marsh, the Mastodon grabed the wolfs with there trunks, slaming them into the ground hard. The Homotherium clawed and crushed the skulls of the wolfs, the beavers dived into the water forceing them to follow them into deep water, The Cave Bear rise to his back feet and swing his mighty paws. The sides where seemed to endless as the injuried back to the human family. As the humans also backed into the marsh, stabing and trusting there weapons, waveing the flames into there faces. They finally meet into the middle. The sides supprised each other as a wolf went for the kill but the Mastodon grabbed the wolf throw it back at the other wolfs. The humans stabbed a attacking wolf killing it instantly. As the battle went on all the creatures and humans where there for the long hall. By day light, the dead of a few Mastodon, humans and majority of the wolfs were left. The Alphas where dead. As the victories celebrate there victories over the invaders. Years past as the ice age ended, this location became a safe haven for the cave bears, mastodon, giant beavers, and homotherium. Even after there species went exstinct they were the last known species to have existed. To the present. Mr. Ratburn's class was visiting the Elwood City Museum. They entered the display room for prehistoric animals. Arthur sees a image of the animals and humans together fighting some wolfs. "Excuse me sir." Arthur said to Mr Ratburn. "Yes, Arthur." Mr. Ratburn replied. "Why is there those animals with the humans?" Arthur asked. Mr. Ratburn, looked at the picture and than to Arthur. "I do not know, Arthur." He said. "All I do know that according to legend that the animals joined the humans to battle the wolfs that attacked there communitee." Arthur and his class left the picture as the sounds of the Mastodon trumpit, the Homotherium Roared, the Bear growled and the Beaver slaped the water. The End
