Known for works such as True East and Jimmy Hopped the C Train, his first play was It Began with a Whistle, which he directed in Elwood City. He returned to Elwood City to direct a revival of It Began with a Whistle for the play's twentieth anniversary. Toffman helped Fern be able to adapt her own character to the role of the character Little Lucie.
