Lydia has had two last names. In Connor's original entry, Lydia's full name was Lydia Fox. Lydia was the winning character in the "All Kids Can Character Search" contest,[6] created by Connor Gordon of Savage, Minnesota.[1]

Connor noticed the Arthur characters were mostly forest animals, but a fox wasn't taken yet.[3] He made Lydia a girl fox because he thought foxes looked feminine.[3] Connor chose Lydia to be in a wheelchair because he wanted people to know that not all people with paralysis were born that way, saying that she dove into the shallow end of a swimming pool when she was seven & a spinal injury paralyzed her from the waist down.[7] However, this idea was not kept in the TV episode, & Lydia specifically says she was born without use of her legs.

A local news interview with Connor from KARE, an NBC affiliate in the Minneapolis-St Paul area, hinted in 2010 that Lydia may become a permanent character on the show.[8] Despite CVS Caremark's 2009 claim that Lydia was planned to be in 2 additional episodes,[5] these episodes weren't actually in development at all.[9] In spite of this, Lydia was planned to appear in season 18,[9][10] which was over 6 years later. Due to the fact that 2 seasons were produced at once, Lydia's episode was made part of season 19 instead. This episode turned out to be "Little Miss Meanie".

Lydia has had 2 last names. In Connor's original entry, Lydia's full name was 'Lydia Fox'. In the voice credits for "The Wheel Deal", her name was changed to Lydia Gordon,[11] presumably in reference to Connor Gordon, though this last name's not spoken in the episode itself. In "Little Miss Meanie", the full name 'Lydia Fox' is said aloud multiple times.
