Introduction

Arthur is tossing and turning in bed.

Arthur: (sighs)  Sometimes, no matter what you do, it's impossible to get to sleep. Some people try counting sheep.

At the Crosswire mansion Muffy lies awake.

Muffy: Bailey!      Bailey stands in the door in a dressing gown.

Bailey: Trouble sleeping, Miss Muffy?   Muffy nods.   (clears throat)  One long-haired merino lamb... two long-haired merino lambs...

Muffy: (yawns)

Bailey: … three long-haired merino lambs... four long-haired merino lambs...  Muffy falls asleep.

Brain lies awake.

Arthur: Brain finds that pi helps him sleep. But not the kind you eat.   Brain takes a calculator from under his pillow and looks at the number pi.

Brain: The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is...three point one…four… (sighs)  He drops the calculator and falls asleep.

Buster lies in bed with a schoolbook and notes next to him.

Arthur: There's one thing that never fails to put Buster to sleep. Homework!    When I can't get to sleep, I take a few deep breaths, imagine a clear, blue lake and...   There is a banging on the door.

D.W.: Quit talking to yourself! You're keeping me up!

Arthur: Ohh.

Title Card: Vicita in Bed

Vicita points at her stuffed animals.

Vicita: “Pata Sucia fue a la feria para comprar un par de medias. Como medias no había, Pata Sucia se reía. Ja, je, ji, jo, ju, Pata Sucia eres tu!”   [Dirty Paw went to the fair to buy a pair of socks. As there were no socks, Dirty Paw laughed. Ha, hey, hee, ho, hoo, Dirty Paw is you!]    She takes a stuffed llama.   Come on, Raulito, time for bed.   Papa! I'm ready!

Mr. Molina comes in and looks at the bookshelf while Vicita lies in bed.

Mr. Molina: Where is “The Very Magic Mango Tree”?

Vicita: It isn't on the bookshelf?!    She looks under her bed.    All that's under here is some dust and two pennies.

#

The Molinas search in the kitchen.  /  The Molinas search the car. Ramon finds a squished sandwich in Vicita’s jacket.

Mr. Molina: Ay!      He ooks at Vicita and shakes his head.  / Vicita sits on the couch. Mr. Molina looks under a cushion.     That's where they were!    Vicita looks hopeful. Mr. Molina holds up his glasses.

#

Vicita lies in bed again. Her parents sit with her.

Mr. Molina: What if I read you another story?

Vicita: Okay...but it probably won't work!

#

Vicita lies between her parents as Mr. Molina reads “Goldilocks”.

Mr. Molina: The mama bear said, "Who's been sleeping in my bed?”. And then the baby bear pointed to Goldilocks and said...

Vicita: Why do these bears sleep on beds? How come they eat porridge? And if she had brown hair, would she be called Brownilocks?

#

At dawn Mrs. Molina is asleep and there are lots of children’s books lying around. Mr. Molina is still reading and Vicita is still awake.

Vicita: So, if I were Jack, I would put in an escalator and save some time! Is a beanstalk like spinach? Eeewww!     She notices that Mr. Ramon has fallen asleep as well.

#

The preschoolers are playing on their playground.

James: I’ll get you!     Vicita sits in the sandbox looking half asleep. When a ball bumps against her, she ignores it.

D.W.: Hey, Vicita! Wanna play?

Vicita: (yawns) Maybe tomorrow.

D.W.: What's wrong?

Vicita: I'm tired. I lost my favorite book, “The Very Magic Mango Tree”. I can't sleep without it!    Timmy chases Tommy.

Timmy: Come back here!

D.W.: Did you try reading a different one?

Vicita: Last night, Papa read me every book I have. Nada! [Nothing! ]

D.W.: Hmmm. I think I know someone who might be able to help.

Vicita and D.W. are sitting on Vicita’s bed. Brain explains a flipchart labelled “The Sleep Cycle” to them.

Brain: As we can see in stage two of the pie chart, the polysomnographic readings show both positive and negative waves.

Vicita: If that's a pie, why isn't it on a plate? And where's the ice cream?    D.W. nods.

Brain: It's a pie chart depicting the sleep cycle.

Vicita: Sleep Cycle? Is that a bicycle you ride when you're asleep? That sounds dangerous.

D.W.: You're supposed to be boring her to sleep, not frightening her!    She pushes Brain out of the room.

Brain: What?! Understanding the circadian rhythms of sleep is not boring!

#

The Tibbles are on the swings in the playground. D.W. and Vicita stand beside them.

Timmy: Can't sleep? Just do what we do!

Tommy: I jump on my bed and Timmy sings me a lullaby.

Timmy: (sings:) “Twinkle, twinkle, little bro. /  It's too bad you'll never grow. / An evil witch has made you small. / All your life you'll have to crawl. / Twinkle, twinkle, little bro.”   D.W. and Vicita cover their ears.    Better run, before the witch comes back and turns you into a worm with warts!    They jump off the swings and chase each other. In the back Mrs. Tibble and Mrs. Molina sit on a bench. Mrs. Tibble is knitting, Mrs. Molina seems to be asleep.

Tommy: And then, Timmy chases me all over the house!

D.W.: Lullabies are meant to make you fall asleep!

Tommy: We do fall asleep.

Timmy: When we run out of energy! (laughs)
