Marc Brown knocks over a trashcan with his car. Pal plays in the trash and comes into the house extremely dirty, much to the family's disapproval.
The episode starts of with a car backing and hitting a garbage can. Amigo is intrigued and plays in the garbage. When he arrives home, the family is disgusted. Kate is now talking to Pal about how bad it is to roll around in garbage. Pal continues to scratch an itch on his leg. The next day, is lying in his bed when he sees that Pal is scratching his itch. He suggests that Pal should go to the vet. Pal is afraid by the idea and hides under Arthur's bed. Outside, Kate, Killer, and Amigo talked in the sandbox about Pal's itch. Killer fears that it's "the big itch" which she says it's an itch so bad that no matter how you scratch it, it won't let you go. She then demonstrates by biting a bone and shaking it. Amigo comments that the only thing worse than the big itch is the cone! While he said that, David arrives home with Pal having a cone. Pal then tells Amigo, Killer, and Kate on how traumatizing the vet was. He said that he even lost his appetite. The dogs and Kate gasp, and then Jane sets down Pal's food. Pal tries to eat it, but the cone keeps pushing the bowl. He gives up, and says that the will starve. Kate is now in her crib scratching Pal's back before taking a break. Pal's itch begins to become unbearable. Killer tells a story on her Grandfather

Pal and the Big Itch
complete plot

Later, Pal discovers a sore on his leg and gnaws at it, despite Kate warning him no to. The next morning, the itching is so bad, that Arthur wants to take Pal to the vet.

Amigo and Killer tell Kate about the "big itch", which never lets you go. The only thing worse is "the cone". Just then, Mr. Read returns with Pal, who is now wearing a cone to keep him from gnawing at the sore.

Pal tells a dramatic story of his ordeal at the vet, but brightens up when Mrs. Read gives him food. However, the cone keeps pushing his dog dish away, so that he cannot eat. Amigo offer to bring him table scraps.

Two days later, Pal treats his friends like servants. Kate scratches his back and Amigo brings him scraps. When Pal itches again and cannot scratch, Killer distracts him by telling him about her grandfather, Fido Carnebone. Fido was known as the Dogfather. In a flashback (or possibly fantasy), he sends his three sons to get a ball back for a dachshund. Killer is about to relate how Fido was betrayed by one of his sons, when Thora calls her. She promises to finish the story later, if Pal is still stuck in the cone.

A few days later, Arthur removes the cone. Pal runs out to Kate and Amigo. He pretends that he is still suffering, because he wants the roast beef that Amigo has brought, but Kate just laughs at him and Amigo eats the beef.

Later, Kate is too busy with her toys to scratch Pal. When Killer comes to visit, Pal puts his head in the cone, so that she will tell him the rest of the story. Killer tells him how Fido came across his wounded son, Bobo, in a dark street and got cornered by two big dogs. Bobo had been faking his injury, just like Pal. At this, Killer leaves Pal and swears never to tell him how the story ended.

Pal is downhearted and gets the idea to get another itch. He jumps into a trashcan which rolls away. Amigo stops it with his body and is hurt.

The episode ends with Amigo having to wear a cone. Pal feeds him and tells him of how his mother worked as a circus dog.
