She is one of the many minor characters in the series, but is one of the few minor characters that is named so far. She usually sits with Brain, Fern, and Muffy in class and most likely hangs out with them, along with the other main characters, but is seen with Alex most of the time. It is currently unknown if she will ever speak or become a main character in future episodes. She has a brother named Steve that is seen throughout the series, but unlike her, Steve has spoken before and is a fourth grader.

Maria is a rabbit with a cream complexion. She wears a teal dress and a dark blue and pink striped shirt, along with brown shoes. In the summertime she wears a pink and light blue dress and the same brown shoes as always. She has brown hair that resembles D.W.'s. For sleeping, Maria wears pink pajamas, as seen in "The World of Tomorrow". In "Desk Wars" she wears a light blue and pink swimsuit while swimming at Muffy's mansion.
|full name=Maria Pappas
Trivia
|other names=Ms. Pappas
*She and Alex are the most recurring of the subtle characters. These two are also the last characters in Mr. Ratburn's class that have not been focused on in the series.

**In "Arthur Rides the Bandwagon", she had a yellow Woogle. Alex and Fern are seen stretching a yellow one on the playground, despite their Woogles being lime-green and purple, respectively. This could mean that Maria lent hers to Alex.
|residence = Maria's house, Elwood City
*Despite reappearing the most out of any minor/unnamed character, she has never spoken by herself, and is the only student of Mr. Ratburn's class not to do so. (Although she talked in a group in many times, we cannot tell what her voice sounds like.)
|family = Mrs. Pappas (mother)<br/>Steve (brother)
**In the beginning of "Francine Goes to War," she says something that upsets Francine, although she said it before the scene opened.
|book_debut = Arthur's Teacher Trouble
*In "Buster Makes the Grade", Buster throws a crumbled up piece of paper at her, which annoys her.
|cartoon_debut = "Arthur's Eyes"
*She could possibly live next to Grandma Thora's house (evidenced in "Arthur Rides the Bandwagon".)
|portrayer=Stacey DePass (s19-present)
*In "Arthur's Eyes", she is briefly seen wearing glasses. This is either an animation error or she was originally supposed to wear glasses. It is even possible that she still does, but just wears contact lenses instead.

Maria's given name appeared in written form in "Arthur's Number Nightmare" (2009). However, the context of this episode could not narrow down the name to this character. "MacFrensky", which aired the next day in the U.S., proved that the last unnamed girl in Mr. Ratburn's class was Maria. The Arthur crew has since confirmed this on social media Other times, she has spoken in unison with other people. While the words are clear, the sound of her voice is not.
Some language dubs of Arthur have made changes not present in the English version. In the Hebrew dub of "Buster Makes the Grade", Maria says "ow!" when the crumpled paper ball hits her head. In the original version, she remains silent.-->

At New York Comic Con in October 2013, [[Peter K. *In the Living Books computer games that are based on the books, Maria had a light yellow complexion and brown hair in Arthur's Teacher Trouble. When the player clicks on the poster behind her, the drawing comes to life and looks between Maria's ears. Clicking on Maria herself makes her say, "I thought I'd win," which was her first distinct speaking line ever. It is unknown exactly who voiced her, since the voice actors for minor characters were listed together with no distinction.

*A puzzle produced by Fortune East Group depicts Maria with a white complexion and blonde hair.
